Chinese Cuisine
The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.
Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.
There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.

This deserves 4 stars because of the service and taste! I had the orange chicken and my boyfriend had the general tao, and they were both some of the best we have ever had. The crab ragoon were okay, but i have had .. and that is one of my major deciding factors if Chinese is good or not. The waitstaff was very friendly and always there to refill our drinks. The "munci munchi" with plum sauce and spicy mustard was another big hit to snack on before the food came, I could have had that soley for a meal! I am impressed and will be returning here on out for my chinese in RO!

Really great food and service!

USED TO looovvvve this place, never again. I am done. Dont mean to be a jerk but - call me crazy - I feel as a consumer I deserve to be treated at least with some respect, not like an idiot, not rudely, like I am a valued customer AND ... no worse than I TREAT THE PLACE at which I am dining. This said - after many visits and patronage - not only am I disappointed by the change in egg rolls BUT most importantly this: The minimum DEBIT card purchase is $6, and I am suuurrreee the exorbitant fee$ are such a cost to a place that is always packed AND charges an arm-and-a-leg ANYway BUT when my total carry out for 4 egg rolls was $5.30 they (she? _____ name escapes me) just could not see fit to make an exception. "Just cant." THATs the explanation, and when (based on PRINCIPLE) i decided that maybe it would be best to leave without them ... they really did not give a damn. YES I had a $5 bill and change in the ashtray. DESPITE the many visits; eating in; a family PARTY there ... and more. Just thought I would share. AND I dont care, there are TOO MANY OTHER places to try, eat at, and patronize. I will not PAY MY earned $ to be treated like sh**. THANK YOU for your time.

I'll admit that I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to Chinese food, as I've been told we don't have anything close to the real deal here and I'm not very brave with the menu. With that said, I never get Sweet and Sour anything and VERY rarely get Almond Boneless Chicken (only if I'm splitting with my husband, because we can't agree on anything else usually). My standard dishes are General Tso's and Vegetable Lo Mein, but I will branch out to a Sesame Chicken or Ham Fried Rice on occasion. I typically find Chinese food very boring and bland in comparison to its other Asian counterparts (i.e., Thai, Korean, Vietnamese, Japanese), but it's still something that I need to have in my stack of carry out menus because it's just a staple. It's easy, fairly reliable, and typically cheap. Peking House is my place. The General Tso's (spicy please!) is just the right combination of sweet and spicy and I don't find it to be all batter like other places. The Vegetable Lo Mein is my favorite anywhere (with the really skinny noodles, not spaghetti) and I love their spring rolls. I've never actually eaten there in all these years I don't think, only gotten carry out (which is always pleasant and speedy, but parking can kinda suck), so I can't attest to the service, but from what I've seen the ambiance is nice and it's always hoppin' when I go in there. It is a bit pricier than other places, but you do get a TON of food (I can easily get three meals out of the dinner portions) and for tastier, more consistent dishes, I'm certainly willing to pay a little more.

Got take out, so can't say much about the service for dining-in, but the entrance decor looked nice and the food was good. Portions are huge! Especially for the price, I was pretty impressed. I got the chicken and broccoli and it was delicious. The chicken seemed legit, whereas you can get some questionable meat at other chinese restaurants. My boyfriend got a combination entree and liked the fried rice and his chicken as well. Neither of us could finish our food in one night, and probably could have even shared one entree! Great quality and cheap price (under $10 an entree!)

Peking House has amazing food all around-- fresh seafood, and the meat is always clean and fresh too! You can tell the quality! The soft shell crab appetizer and spicy tofu are awesome!!!! The triple seafood with crunch noodles is amazing--- so is the salt and pepper flounder!!!! Honestly, especially since it is under new management, you cannot get any better authentic chinese food than this!! Fast, friendly, and fresh food every time!!!! My favorite in all of Oakland County!

I love going to Peking House when I'm home from school. I went twice this month with my friend Ashley and the owner, who is a family friend and knows that I don't eat meat, made me a special vegetarian dish. They are a real family run business and they care a lot about their customers.

This place is great. I didn't even know it was there until some friends and I were out on a bike ride and we decided to get dinner there. They were already fans. I'll tell you right now, I don't know anything about authentic Chinese food, besides the 'dirty tofu' I've seen Andrew Zimmerman eat. What I do know is that places like Peking House serve an Americanized version of Chinese food, complete with sugary sweet sauces and battered and fried meats. When we walked in, I was right away reminded of a place in Marysville that my family used to go to once in awhile. Both are sit-down restaurants with nice things on the walls, booths, and impeccable service. Growing up, I thought all Chinese restaurants were like that and everything was served from a lazy susan in the middle of the table. Now I see most Chinese restaurants as takeout joints that all have the same faux-granite formica on the counter-top where you place your order; the same menu with numbered lunch combos; and enough MSG to make your ears go numb. I don't know, is there a term for this kind of service? You order a dish, and when it's served the server brings a large covered plate with a pile of food on it. They also bring a big platter of white rice for the whole table and then serve your first portion to you. One friend had the sesame chicken, which I tried. I've learned my lesson in the past, it's almost always fried for too long and the chicken gets tough. That was the case at Peking House, unfortunately. I had the sweet and sour pork and it was fantastic. I know it's not authentic, but I love when there's lots of batter on the chunks of pork. My other friend got the Lo Mein and it was pretty amazing, too. The portions are enormous. Fried food soaked in sweet and sour sauce doesn't re-heat very well, but if it did, I could've stretched that plate of food to three meals total. If you want a good American-style Chinese food experience in a sit-down restaurant, I recommend Peking House.
(4)Colleen W.
We ordered take out, so I cant say anything about the actual restaurant....but as far as the food goes, AWESOME! I knew we where in for some great Chinese when I opened up my carry out and say ALL kinds of veggies in the fried rice. The sweet and sour chicken was very good, had a very good tasting sauce. We will be back soon, Im sure!
(5)S B.
I patronize because of its location and the food is not fastfood. The food is decent just not decent enough to eat it on a regular basis. In a word, the food is bland. I ordered the chicken and broccoli and I had to come home and add some seasoning to it. What it really needed was some Chinese seasonings. Other than that, it tasted just like chicken and gravy. I suspect the only reason it remains open is because of its location - Royal Oak.
(2)P. T.
As usual their food is great! It's the nicest Chinese around here:) This time, THANKFULLY, I had a nice girl that was clearly well spoken and friendly - answer the phone (rather than the older cranky, unfriendly woman) to answer my questions on their delivery service, which is a secondary company called Restaurant Connection, GREAT service by the way...Will surely use again.

I'm ALWAYS down for asian - japanese, thai, vietnamese, and CHINEEESE ;) However, whenever my boyfriend and I felt lazy and just wanted some quick Chinese, we would head over to the local Chinese Buffet... He had an easy time since he was able to savor most of the seafood items, especially crab legs (which is where you make your money back from the $12.95 buffet you just paid for). He would devour an ample amount of crab, crawfish, shrimp, etc. which is a lot healthier than what I would be stuck with since I'm allergic to shellfish: general tso's chicken, pork potstickers, and lots of other fried greesey things...and I would end up feeling fat and sick. And then there was Peking House.... *sigh* I didn't think good Chinese really existed until I stumbled across this place. Peking, you make me want to enjoy Chinese again! Their Mongolian Beef... just thinking about it makes my mouth water! The beef is cooked to perfection and is tender, not chewy like most places... and it's swimming in a savory brown gravy with sauteed green peppers, onions and mushrooms. Although I didn't try it, their mountain of Shrimp Fried Rice looked really good, with a decent amount of plump shrimp. And for you vegetarians out there, Peking knows how to do right by vegetables... I'm not a big fan of ordering vegetarian especially when I'm eating out, but their String Beans are surprisingly good. That I wouldn't mind ordering on the side of the Mongolian Beef or other meat dish to add some variety to the meal. Their appetizers/soups are typical cheap Chinese restaurant prices but their specialty entrees and some beef entrees are around $14-15. But it's justified since 1 entree is really enough for two if you don't want to over-eat. The ambiance is also mellow and pleasurable and the staff is really nice, I will definitely go here again!

This is our families favorite Chinese restaurant. They have the best soup and fried chips (crackers--not sure what to call them), the plum sauce is fantastic. It taste a little like apple sauce but I love it, the egg rolls, hong kong steak, lo mein with chicken, fried rice, etc. There is nothing I have tried here that I didn't like. The service is always good. We've tried many other chinese restaurants but we keep coming back to this one. It's really hard to find a good chinese restaurant.
(5)Carl W.
This is my second favorite Chinese restaurant. I love it and the staff is very friendly. Especially the female owner. She always stops to talk to make sure everything is fine (which it always is) and her husband is flying around keeping everyone happy. I go there for lunch during the week and they are fast.
(5)Brian W.
Definitely exceeded our expectations. The food was amazing. Bf is vegetarian, they were very accommodating to his food needs and wants. Would recommend peking house to anyone wanting to experience a gracious staff and amazing food!!!

I heart Asian food, as a vegetarian I really feel like they offer a wide range of tasty fare for a girl like me. So, when I want to get my Chinese on I take a trip to Royal Oak's Peking house. Located on Washington Ave, right near the train tracks, Peking House is one of the best local Chinese restaurants around. For years (literally) I had been hearing about this joint, but never made it in. Until one day I did, and my life was forever changed. The clean and quiet setting is perfect for that first date(and the meals aren't too pricey, so if that blind date ends up being a bummer, no harm, no foul). Peking House offers all the traditional, typical Chinese restaurant food, from wonton soup, to dumplings(which my nephew and brother and law rave about), to Lo Mein and more. In my many trips to this lovely place I've tried the majority of the vegetarian dishes, even some noodle dish where the noodles literally looked like worms. Although, visually unappealing those even tasted good. The Lo mein, with thin noodles and a mélange of veggies is always satisfying. The Tofu with mixed vegetables is light, healthy, and delicious. And for you carnivores, I've hear d nothing but accolades for their beef and broccoli as well as the peppered steak. The hearty portions are always seasoned perfectly and consistently, the service friendly and kind. In addition, to a tasty menu Peking House has a full bar including sakes and Asian beers, like Asahi. So, if you're looking for a nice, chill dinner or a place to take a date, venture over to Royal Oak, and nosh on some delicious Chinese at Peking House.

The garlic chicken & General Tso Chicken were BLAND as was a few other dishes I ordered. Very disappointing. The only thing that tastes good here is the Mongolian Beef.
(2)M V.
We ate here last night and it was just ok. A solid meal, but nothing specatular. I had the General Tsao's Chicken. The taste of the brown rice seemed a little off compared to what I am used to. I recently moved down here and am still looking for that go-to Chinese joint. Please feel free to give me your opinions.
(2)Kiarash Z.
Eat here if you want a nice Chinese dining experience. Don't go for take-out. Let me explain. After a pricey sushi lunch, the lady and I wanted to save some dough on dinner. We still had Asian on our tongues, so she suggested Chinese. Because it was a Monday, Young's Carry-Out was closed. I found Peking House on Yelp and called for sweet-and-sour shrimp and chicken chow mein. The woman who took my order didn't give a total. She shouted, "20 MINUTES," and hung up. No big deal, it was dinner time; they probably were busy. You also can order online. Anyway, I drove over to pick up the food. The joint is HUGE, like the CostCo of Chinese restaurants. I parked in the adjacent lot (metered) and hustled inside. When I heard my total, $20, I was a bit surprised. It's not insurmountably expensive, but we ordered two simple items. To account for some of the cost, both dishes were loaded with meat. The shrimp was more like prawns the size of my index finger. The chow mein was loaded with big, tender cuts of chicken. However, it bordered more on Campbell's than Canton. My take-out bag was missing chopsticks and fortune cookies. That's not cool. And the soy sauce was the fake kind: Just colored salt water.

All got to say to this waiter was to take a chill pill! My dining experience felt rushed but food was ok... Good portions but Don't try the pad thai! It's the worse think I had, maybe because they used big noodles?! Idk Should have ordered something else more edible, fried rice was good thou... Liked the appetizer & the soup that's why I gave it at least 2 stars... No wonder I haven't been here in years!
(2)Jennifer W.
Amazing! I love this place.... their portions are amazing and so is the quality. The menu offers a great variety and tons of options to choose from. The decor is great, it's not tacky or cheesy like some. The staff if very quick and attentive as well.
(4)J. M.
I have been coming here for over 15 years and have yet to find a Chinese restaurant that lives up to their standards. Good food, good service and always a good dishes. Typically I go with my standard fried rice or sweet & sour chicken (sauce on side), egg drop soup and an egg role. ENJOY!
(5)Yasmin K.
I was excited about eating here because it has quite good reviews from others on yelp, but i was a little disappointed with the quality of the food. It was just too oily for me. Also we sat in the windowless back part of the restaurant, which makes me question how clean things are if you can't see anything and is a bit depressing.
(3)Bridgette A.
As a glorified 'Youngs Chinese' lover and adamant follower, I'm always skeptical when it comes to "cheating" on my beloved Youngs. But unfortunately, it was a Monday, and Youngs was closed. Also being 8 months pregnant and wanting Chinese (WANTING, CRAVING, etc) I decided to look up online reviews for other restaurants and saw some good reviews for Peking House. I WISH I would've waited till Tuesday to have my craving! We typically order the same thing at every Chinese rest. we go to. My husband has Almond Boneless Chicken, and I order General Tso's. We occasionally order Wonton and Hot/Sour soup to go along with it. The wonton soup honestly, was the only item enjoyed! Although it was missing the leafy greens thats typical inside the soup. The hot and Sour was 'okay' wasn't great! My husbands ABC, looked almost black in color, had no lettuce with it, barely any sauce, and lacked flavor. My General Tso's was NOT good! I like a spicy Tso's!! this was sweet, and once again very little sauce. It somewhat reminded me of sesame chicken, too sugary and sweet, and BARELY any spice! The eggrolls were 99% cabbage! I was highly disappointed in this restaurant, and will most likely never eat there again! Ive learned 'to each their own' when it comes to Chinese food. But if you like Youngs... you will NOT like this place!
(1)Isabel K.
I have eaten inside the restaurant only once and the service was good. They are very on top of it. But we do get take out from them and for chinese take out it is darn good! Garlic chicken is one of my fav's and the mongolian beef is tasty too. They always give alot so there is left over or can be easily shared. And, the guys that work the take out counter/register are the nicest older men around. So friendly, always willing to explain the food options and very fast.
(4)Karl L.
This place has been here as long as I can remember. It's your standard Chinese food, it's no Mon Jin Lau, but that's ok. I've had maybe one bad meal here in 20 years. Seriously, it's standard, consistent and good. Nice people. If memory serves me, they have great scotch selections??? Almost exclusive takeout on my part. But it's clean inside. Recommend the combo's.
(4)Theresa U.
I haven't had Chinese in about 3 years. Peking House is perfect for a large group. I had a party of 8 with no wait! Luckily the owner's wife recognized a special friend in the group that was a bus boy for many of his high school years. =). So, we had a round of coconut shrimp, beef bbq skewers, and egg roll. Then tried the wonton soup. It was on the salty side. My bf and I split the almond chicken. It was more than enough for the two of us and very tasty until I bit into a hard object. Felt like a pebble, or cement. I didn't know what it was. I immediately spit it into my napkin, making a show in front of my friends (how embarrassing) then noticed it had ground my back molar. Not cool. I may need to go to the dentist to get buffed. or just eat plenty of calcium for the enamel to grow back. It's upsetting I had such an experience for the first time. girr.
(3)Shannon S.
My husband and I love Chinese food and have eaten at several different Chinese restaurants. Peking House is by far one of the best. The food was fresh and tasted great. The sauce they serve with the steamed dumplings is amazing and is good on the rice as well. The portions are huge and my husband and I plan on sharing a dish next time we go.
(4)David C.
My place! Know the owners, love the food, great service. My water glass is usually always full. Leave stuffed and love it, Bar Mitzvahs and all. Go...
(5)Jessica S.
The food was good. Not spectacular. I got the Scheswan Shrimp. The portions were really big! I got to take enough back to serve as a whole nother meal. I would reccommend it. Service was great.
(3)Chef Nicholas E.
gross. disgusted. Cheap, yet overpriced. its as if they think you are an idiot and will eat anything. My food was burnt, another dish they served mexican tortillas with instead of chinese pancakes, and it was a chinese pancakes dish! they also use jarred garlic instead of fresh garlic on their SOGGY frog legs. I am not a picky eater, but when I am literally insulted with what I am served I will mention it. Luckily or unluckily for them this was a take out meal and I didnt feel like driving back there and demanding my money back ( though in retrospect I should have).Garbage. rip off. fix this and get some pride in what you do you frauds. if this is food you are willing to serve to paying customers, I can only imagine how terrible your health inspections must look. If you eat here you should count yourself an idiot. You'll have no one to blame but yourself after this review. Don't waste your time and money. it's worth the drive to Pei wei
(1)Amanda K.
Peking house is great, although I might be a bit biased. I love it here! I had my bat mitzvah here, ten years ago, I love the garlic chicken, the sauteed string beans, the general tzohs is good, hands down best veggie spring rolls I've ever had in my life!!! Nothing compares... definitely check it out, plus the people here are great.
(4)Erica S.
we tried the sweet and sour chicken, looking for the basic new york style chinese food. yeah, not sure what's going on here. we actually picked this place because we read so many good reviews, but maybe this particular dish should just be passed up. long story short, the breading on the chicked was over-cooked, in fact it was fried twice in what tasted like oil that had been burnt and desperately needed a change. i do give them props for pretty phenomenal fried rice - really fresh tasting and not super nast like most, but the entree and egg roll due to the oil age and condition were both nearly unedable. im not sure if i would go here again, maybe if it was free and and i tried a different dish. and maybe if i let them put msg in it the next time :) anyways, the next day i went to jade palace on 10 mile and the ss chicken was phenomenal (no im not affiliated - just had some mass cravings for good chinese one week)
(2)Cory O.
Hands down the highest quality and most flavorful chinese food around. A tad on the pricey side, but a value considering the quality of food and the outstanding service. Very nice dining room and bar area too.
(5)Patrick N.
This place is absolutely terrible. My girlfriend and I dined here tonight because we wanted some chinese and didn't want to travel far from my house. In retrospect we should have just got take out from kams. My almond boneless chicken was tough at the thinner spots, as if they microwaved frozen chicken before putting it in the frier. The waitress asked how spicy my gf wanted her orange chicken and she chose hot (she likes it really spicy). It did not have any spice at all. She had me taste it because she was amazed that asking for the hottest end of the spectrum would produce the same thing if you asked for no spice at all. When we asked the waitress if they added spice to the dish her response was "well the sauce is kind of always spicy so they dont really add spice to it". Then why the fuck would they ask how spicy she wants it? Also, we were asked if we wanted egg rolls and soup which we said yes to assuming it came with the dinner, of course they did not and cost us extra. The food just didn't taste good, regardless of the glaring issues. The decor is gaudy as hell. What could be a cool dining area is destroyed by tacky christmas lights hung from a dirty ceiling, about 25% of them did not even work, not that it really would make a difference if they did. The cringiest part of their decor is the entry way, with this weird art piece of people in suits and dresses. It looks like something out of 1982 or from a low-income retirement home in Beijing, sun bleached and dusty behind glass. Okay, Okay. Shitty service and ugly decor. At least it's cheap, right? Wrong. Our bill for two dinners was almost 38 dollars. Jesus-tapdancing-Christ. Leaving the place I just thought of all the better places we could have ate at and payed less. I will never come to this place again. Absolutely disgusting.

Gross. Sorry, this is not good. I'll spare my rant of everything tasteless and terrible about what I had at our table. I'll mention my meal. Moo Shu Pork. A dish I know quite well. First question to the very personable and English speaking waiter, "Do you make crepes, ya know pancakes for moo shu?'. Reply, "Yes we do." Moo shu pork comes out, it's gray and awful looking. I taste it, totally bland, and nowhere near the medium spice level requested. I open the lid on what normally holds rice looking for my crepes, and inside I find a warmed up FLOUR TORTILLA. I laughed. When I asked the waiter about this and explained what I expected he said "oh like Chinese taco," and walked away. I get that the 'Moo Shu Pancakes' are not traditional and is the construct of Americanized Chinese (along with the side of hosin sauce), but he clearly knew what I was talking about. Thanks for lying to me, if I had an honest answer I would not have ordered the meal I did. About 5+ years ago I used to come here every so often, wasn't bad. Deep fried chicken soaked in a sweet sauce, which is one thing they do to a passable standard, does not make good Chinese food.
(1)Chris M.
I've eaten here many times over the years both carry out and dine in. The last couple of times I've been here over the past seven months The quality of food has gone down this last visit with takeout was absolutely horrible. I will not be returning.
(2)Cathy W.
Only need two words to describe our meal there yesterday : tasteless and greasy. What a disappointment! Eggrolls and spring rolls were hot, but that's the only thing in their favor.Egg drop soup wasn't bad. But the tofu lo mein? Have never had any as greasy and bland as was prepared here. There was seriously NO flavor to the dish - only a starchy lomein noodle paired with greasy completely bland tofu. Unbelievable! Garlic green beans lacking in flavor as well with more of a salty flavor than anything else ( forgot the garlic?). As what was listed as a cashew chicken looked like something from Costco's frozen section and was lukewarm at best. Unusual experience for us to leave minus carryout containers, leaving 80% of the uneaten entrees behind. There is no way we'd return.
(1)Dan L.
To preface my 5 star rating, I have to give some background on my Chinese-American go to dish: Orange Chicken. Sure, it's the beta of Chinese dishes, but none can compare to its almighty odor, its awe inspiring display, and its delectable distinguishable saucy mc-sauce sauce. On the range of orange chicken, you usually get 2 extremes: The Naked - health consciousness' fantasy, and generally tasty, it is ok....if you're into that kind of thing....; The Over Breaded - like a dutch oven of pure rot, there is just way too much breading on these suckers, you hardly taste the meat, and you're left bloated yet wanting more. But alas....there is a champion of the orange chicken, a cavalier dish so completely perfect that if Sun Tzun and Harry Potter sat down and used their will, cunning, and magic, this orange chicken dish, Peking House's orange chicken dish, would be the result. A perfect blend of sauce, breading, and chicken, this my friends, THIS IS IT.

I grew up going to Peking House pretty often... It was one of a handful of good Chinese food places in the Detroit area. Unfortunately, I can't remember exactly what I was eating way back then, but I can say that I have fond memories of the overall experience. I was excited to return to Peking House a few weeks ago as their banquet room upstairs was the venue chosen for my sister's rehearsal dinner. A Chinese restaurant for a rehearsal dinner? I know... it was an interesting choice, but it turned out great! The banquet room accommodated the group of over 150 perfectly, with a huge bar on one end, a dance floor and miniature stage in the center, attentive staff that passed appetizers and served once we were seated, and family style meal which included salmon, chicken, veggies, rice, and more. Each table had a lazy Susan, which made it fun and easy for everyone at the table to try all of the dishes and pass them along. If you're in the Royal Oak area and craving Chinese food, or if you're planning a party and looking for a private space, I recommend Peking House.
(4)Jason C.
Surprised they are still in business serving such bland Chinese food! First had a Chinese curry, second visit kungPo Chicken, both very, very tasteless!!! I moved in just round the corner so was praying they served good Chinese - they were not answered.
(1)Derek H.
Great food, BUT the delivery situation is terrible. They took almost TWO HOURS to bring it. Never been so hungry/irked in my life
(3)Jake A.
I'm always tempted to snatch something off one of those carts at Peking House. Someone else's dinner flying past my table just looks so delicious I want to sneak a quick piece. Fortunately for the other diners, the waitstaff is attentive and fast moving, so I won't be attempting the great Peking cart snatch anytime soon. After a handful of dinners here, I'm prepared to declare this the only place for my Chinese food now. I have not confirmed it, but I think they base their portion sizes on the appetite profile of a T-Rex. Lots of food, LOTS OF FOOD. This restaurant is the equivalent of that friend's mother who thinks your too skinny and force feeds you an entire pot roast. I always have to get a box to go, though not before I make the mistake of overindulging on almond boneless chicken to the point that I feel like I need to be pushed in one of those food carts back to my car. The food is quite tasty too, there's still a ton on the menu waiting for me to try it, but I haven't been disappointed yet. The staff is chatty, friendly and some of them are downright funny and always make me laugh. This is my only choice for Chinese food. So, let's recap: Lots of food, joke cracking waitresses, delicious Chinese menu, & food carts.
(4)Jake T.
I have been eating here for 17 years and they have never let me down. A really good meal for a really fair price.
(5)Joe B.
I didn't have the opportunity to dine-in but their General Tao's take-out was OK. It was a little better than expected but had a more Cantonese preparation. The fry on the chicken was crispy but a little heavy on the breading. The sauce was gooey and gingery but not very spicy and still too sweet to be great Tso's. The veggie fried rice had that great hot wok flavor to it while the eggroll was mostly sprouts and over-fried. I did like their hot mustard and their plum sauce was not like any I'd had before and more akin to an almost pear sauce. 3.5 stars for this shot at Tso's take-out and definitely better than the norm around town.

Definitely not an upscale venue choice for a company holiday party but great food and excellent service! The "banquet hall" area on the second floor seats around 200 guests with a full service bar option. The appetizers were passed while guest mingled, the dinner was served family style and the night wrapped up with a full dessert table to choose from!

This is the worst Chinese food I've ever had. The fried rice was bland, the lo mein tasted like ramen noodles, the chicken was gamey, and the egg rolls were soggy. (They also charge extra for fortune cookies.) I'm sorry I wasted money on this.
(1)Jessica B.
I was really impressed with the flavor of their food. Seems pretty fresh and the best Chinese I've found around in a long time...Only thing is they skimp you on the almond chicken for some reason, it wouldn't be a bad idea for them to add a piece of chicken to the dish. Doesn't seem their dining room gets the crowd they did a long time ago. If they updated the place and didn't have it so dark and gloomy like the dining room is closed or something, it might spike some eat in business.

I used to eat here in the 80's and 90's. The last 3 times I went , the various dishes were not good at all. I can't ever see returning
(1)Ted H.
Everything about this place is below average in my opinion. The chicken is always a bit overcooked, the fried won ton noodles are usually more on the well done side and don't taste good. Fried rice is very odd here, with carrots and mushrooms in it? Also the fried rice is pretty flavorless. Decor is dated, booths are stained, but otherwise the environment is serviceable. Staff seems attentive and fairly kind. About the only thing I found good was the soup. (Egg Drop) Otherwise there are dozens of other 'traditional'(cheap american) Chinese restaurants around that are much better. As much as I dislike Lims Palace, it's better than this place!

I've been eating here ever since I was 2 and my mom would pick out the mushrooms from the vegetable fried rice to feed me. As I got older I fell in love with their General Tao's chicken, and nothing else has ever compared. Their wonton soup and plum sauce are also to die for. This is by far my favorite Chinese restaurant and I have very fond memories of eating their food at various birthdays and family get togethers. I absolutely love this place.
(5)Scott S.
Tried twice in the last month again tonight was just bad The soup tasted like water am the won tons had no flavor No onions or garnish in the soup Egg rolls different Chicken in the fried rice was chewy or impossible to chew The chicken in the sweet and sour chicken was small bites covered in mounds of breading It's sad this used to be a good bed or at worst it was decent It was bad we even threw out the leftovers Place was pretty empty also Sad But I guess that's life

Peking House has never done me wrong. Just about everything we've ever ordered has wowed us - my husband would never skip General Scott's Chicken and could practically make a meal out of the crab macao. He is also enamored with their shrimp fried rice as it comes with enormous shrimp in large quantities where he was expecting to be ripped off. I personally love Peking House's vegetarian options - their eggplant in garlic sauce is the absolute best. We gladly made the 40 minute round trip to carry out from here. It is a little on the pricy side but the portions are enough for three meals (ok, maybe two if you get way too excited about your food like I do). By the way, it isn't listed on the takeaway menu, but they also do General Scott's Tofu for the veggie folk and it's great!
(5)Michael T.
Peking house honestly has some of the best Chinese food I have had. The General Tao ' s chicken was delicious. We got delivery and the chicken still had some crunch to it. It wasn't soggy at all. The mongolian beef was also great. Everyone should eat at Peking House at least once.

I havent been to the Peking House in a couple of years. Used to be decent, not great, but decent. Decided to have lunch. Its been 24 hours since we had lunch there yesterday. Almond Chicken - not edible, like rubber. Could not cut it with a knife - no joke Vegetable Lo Mein - tasteless brownish goo, noodles like shoelaces Since the ticket was $24.00 - we were compelled to "pick" at our meals to compensate for our cost. Now, 24 hours later, we wish we would not have "picked". Lets just say, it has not been a good morning and we will be not leaving the house today. Never ever we will dine there again. It is a far cry from a couple years ago - not sure what happened. Its just bad....really bad.
(1)Kelly S.
I've yet to find someone that can top their General Tso's chicken. That dish and shrimp fried rice are my go to's. I wish I were more adventurous to try other dishes but for now, I'll gladly dig in to this plate of yummy goodness.
(4)Victoria A.
They used to be good, but have really gone down hill. Everything is bland and actually they are heading toward gross if they do not hire a new chef.
(2)Jaclyn G.
Great takeout, huge portions. I had the vegetable moo shu and friend had shrimp egg foo yung, very fresh, piping hot. We will definitely be back!
(5)Rebecca B.
I'm with many - good atmosphere mediocre food. They have a lot of signs that tell you - I don't know what. Lots of things I guess....? The food is like icky Americanized Chinese food. It'll do, but if you have another choice, take it. it isn't a question of quality of ingrediants, but it is just bland and boring. The prices are about right for Royal Oak, expensive.
(3)John L.
I'm a regular for lunch here. The lunch menu is small, but it should be. They make the dishes they make very well. (I hate when a restaurant tries to make 100 different dishes and none of them are good!) The prices are decent and the service is the best.

I am really struggling with the star rating on Peking House. I've been here several times with my in-laws since it is one of their favorite places. The decor is very nice, and staff is friendly. Our waitresses are always attentive and provide great service. There is a little bit of a language barrier with a couple of the waitresses, but it all seems to work out for the most part. Service definitely deserves 4 stars. I have mixed feelings about the food. Most of the dishes that I've ordered (or shared) are pretty bland, in my opinion. I like the fried won tons and their hot tea. I am not a tea drinker, but I could drink a whole pot of their tea. The egg rolls are nothing special. They have the "spicy" dishes marked on the menu. Since it has been a recent discussion in Yelp Talk, I ordered the General Tso's chicken, which is labeled as "spicy". I asked our waitress if they could make it spicier. This is where the language barrier became a challenge. She explained to me that if I didn't want spice, then I could order it without spice. I got the impression that people don't typically ask for that here or she didn't understand me. I'm not sure. I repeated myself and said I would like more spice (medium). When it arrived, it was not spicy but it wasn't bland either. It was more sweet & tangy than spicy. The portion (for $12.50) was huge. I am confident that you could get 4 meals out of that dish alone. I liked it enough to order again. We were celebrating a birthday during our visit, and our waitress surprised us with a huge brownie with ice cream and fortune cookies. What a nice treat! It's always a pleasant experience when we dine here, so I'm sure we'll be back soon with my in-laws!

Horrible, had the Won-Ton soup, no taste, ordered, the bay shrimp with cashews, I have been sick ever since.........do not go here!!!!

I lived in Royal Oak a few years back and this was one of my favorite restaurants in the area. Even after all this time, I still bring friends and family here so they can try the incredible General Scott's (Tao's) Chicken. It's all white meat, completely crispy, yet drenched in sauce. I've had it countless times at other Chinese restaurants, but have yet to find anything comparable to what they're serving here. The phrase "magically delicious" should be reserved for food this good. Everything else is delightful as well. The complementary fried wontons are fab, the wonton soup is standard, the egg rolls are some of the best I've had and the chicken fried rice makes my sister swoon. If you're hungry, you're in luck; the food comes out fast and the portion sizes are generous. For me, nothing beats Peking House.
(5)Alicia K.
Average Chinese joint. Their soups are top notch - the egg drop and the won ton - and my husband says the Hot n Sour is the best he's had. It's rare to find a spot that always has it available. The egg rolls are bland but still ok. The fried rice is bland but ok. The orange chicken is awesome. Tip - if you come here with company, decide what you want to eat together and only order one full dinner. That's all you need for 2-4 people if you are also getting soup and egg rolls. If you're only one person, I'd just get an appetizer - the portions are GIANT!! Service is pretty good too. Never had a bad experience. Good place to go if you're not looking to be like WOW!!, but just a solid experience.

My first check on any new Chinese restaurant is simple: Are there any Chinese people actually eating there? It's a pretty reliable test. .You'll never see Chinese people eating at Peking House except by accident. See, real Chinese food is about subtle flavors, interesting textures, and the contrasts between fresh and preserved; there's none of that here. The vegetables are all cooked to a texture you could serve to infants, and there are only four discernible flavors: Salt, soy, sugar and grease. Of course, a lot of people actually like this kind of food; then again, a lot of people like MIckey D's and Appleby, too. If that floats your boat, by all means, don't let me dissuade you from going. But if you're looking for Chinese food, head over to Golden Harvest on 12 mile in Warren, or Shangri-La on Orchard Lake.

I just tried takeout from Peking House for lunch via Restaurant Connection. I ordered the fried bok choy (not bad after I added a bit of lite soy sauce), kung pao shrimp (average - not bad but not overwhelming) and one of their house specialties - steak sauteed with shitaki mushrooms in oyster sauce (disappointing - at least from the steak perspective - chewy and flavorless). This will not be on my list moving forward.
(2)Jenn A.
Always a good experience, friendly wait staff and huge portions enough to take home for leftovers the next day. I never leave disappointed.

my past experiences at peking house had made me skip this place for probably the last decade. i always found it overpriced and underwhelming. one late night, the bf and i decided to eat peking house again before going to see john waters' christmas special. the decision was made strictly by the fact that we did not want to wait. it was still the same inside. beat up, old, kinda dinghy. the food though seemed better. my bf had orange beef, which i really liked. the beef was lightly floured and possibly deep fried very shortly to make a very crispy and tasty breading. the sauce also was really nice. i usually find orange chicken too sweet and not orangey enough. this hit the spot. i had a special seafood noodle dish, which was good, but not spectacular. the servings were huge. so were the prices. the waitress was a hoot. she was so animated and nice and just happy. i really liked her. i may return before the decade is over. love, juston

The restaurant is beautiful. Probably the most elegant dining around this area as Chinese restaurants go. The food is another story. It's okay, not great. My dish was rather bland. This reminds me of all things Royal Oak, they appear to be better than what they are. The prices are high and personally I didn't find the food worth it. Not horrible, just not good or great.

I had my Bar Mitzvah here. This marked a cornerstone in my spirtual collapse, which is worthy of at least 5 stars, very sentimental stars. It was a grand affair, though it went by like a blur. It was like a wedding, with far less excitement afterward. But the food was good. If you are considering having a party, shower, anniversary party, etc, the upstairs is a great place, with a big checkered dance floor. The breaking news is that there is new ownership, but the kitchen staff is apparently the same. On my visit last week, there was a noticeably different aesthetic downstairs. I didn't recognize any of the servers, and our waiter was not very pleasant. The plates are different, and my portions were smaller , though the prices weren't. So, my 5 sentimental stars might be counterweighted by negative reality stars, but that remains to be seen. Your experience definitely depends on what you order. I stick to one dish: the eggplant with garlic sauce. Spicy, with extra chili oil on the side. And sometimes I add tofu. And the spring rolls are very good. My family enjoys the general tso chicken. And it is always nice to finish with some peppermint ice cream. The only downside is that I always feel sleepy after eating so much, and can't get any work done!
(5)Ashley H.
I loved this place! We decided to try it out after Seeing it at arts beats and eats. Their lo mein is the best I have ever had! I love how skinny the noodles are. We had to bring an order home with us after our meal because we didn't have much leftover and it was so good. The rest of our meal was great too. We had the general tso and the sweet and sour chicken, which were both great. I was not too impressed with the fried wontons they gave us before the meal. Also, I was disappointed that they didn't have a child size for any of the dishes. The entrées were big for adults, and giant for a 5 year old.
(4)David F.
Wow this place was damn good! Almond chicken, Mongolian beef, and fried rice were delicious! Worth a visit! You wouldn't think much of this place by the looks of it, but let the food speak for itself.

GREAT Chinese food, one of the best in the royal oak area.... The hot and spicy soup is comparable to PF changs version... Yumm!! Also the sesame chicken and sweet and sour chicken were delicious! Not to mention excellent paired with the vegetable fried rice. I did dine in once, the decor is way out dated and is similar to any other janky Chinese restaurant but nonetheless great service and food!
(4)Matthew M.
Best Chinese food in Royal Oak, without question. Try the Adriane Special Chow Mein or the Beef Lo Mein. They're both excellent. Top-notch Egg Drop Soup and Egg Rolls as well. In addition to the great food, their service is excellent. Drinks are always filled and very courteous. I recommended dining in, as everything is super-fresh and hot out of the wok, but carry-out is superb too. A little pricier than other Chinese spots around town, but its worth it if you're looking for a notch above your average carry-out joint.

Got there at 1210 on a Sunday. Sign says they open at 12. Left at 1220 when they still weren't open. Won't be back. They should be more aware of the fact that it was 22 degrees outside and should at least let people wait just inside the doors if they are going to be opening late.

Disappointing food. Did not meet expectations per reputation.

OMG!!! good food, good service nuff said!

The Peking House used to be my favorite chinese restaurant until they switched owners last year. The new owners are no where near as good as the old ones. I've had several bad experiences there. First, they don't put table clothes out during lunch time. And trust me, these tables are clearly meant to be covered by a table cloth. Once when I was eating there, I noticed some tables has table clothes and asked to please be seated there. The waiter rudely yelled that I would need to pay the dinner price if I wanted to sit there. Second, even though the cooks are allegedly the same, the portions are significantly smaller now and I think the quality has gone down. I'm sad to see such a great restaurant so quickly become mediocre.

UNDERWHELMING. I'm new to the area...and am looking for my go-to Chinese restaurant. A lot of co workers told me this is the place. ABSOLUTELY NOT! The decor was promising...I swear places that look questionable & outdated (mauve palette) are almost always the best places to eat. I was wrong for this place. The 'plum sauce,' was not what I know plum sauce to be...no vinegar taste...just a flavorless gelatinous sauce in a bowl. Their won ton strips brought out at the beginning of the meal are so dense...I guess i like the more airy ones. The egg rolls filling was good...but tasted freezer burnt. I ordered egg drop soup. YUCK. couldn't eat it. tasted like straight up chicken broth, and was only room temperature. Next came our entries...I ordered veggie lo mein...had more scent than did taste, but it was pretty good...however by this time, i was already over the place. My BF ordered the general tso's chicken after reading someone's review on here about it being crispy with a lot of sauce, etc....it was crispy...the piece i tried was batter only, no chicken. and the sauce was really sweet and sticky...it reminded me of something you would get at the food court in the mall. I will definitely not go back...not even when I'm missing my favorite chinese restaurant - Canton China in Canton, MI. I wish I would have followed other reviews when reading 'she ain't what she used to be.' Don't do this to yourself.
(1)Parisa K.
It's under new ownership.... It's still really good but they've changed some of the dishes, making it a more unique cuisine than your typical Chinese restaurant. I suggest you read the menu carefully, ask questions, and keep an open mind. If you follow those three steps, you'll not be disappointed.
(5)Debbie E.
Great service, tasty food, & reasonable prices.
(4)Vic J.
Two words....Orange Beef! Been to the resturaunt maybe a dozen times over the years. Never been disappointed. Discovered the orange beef a few years ago and now it is a must have dish. Staff is attentive and service is good.
(4)Pete D.
This a hard one to judge the food is not bad just not great. Nothing to say "I got to go back that dish". I don't think the food is fresh. You be the judge for yourself.
(3)Misty J.
So good! The hot and sour soup has the perfect amount of heat and sour. The waitress was very nice and funny. They have carts they roll around to bring you your food, so cute. The general tao chicken is delicious and crispy. Actually, I have no complaints. weird.

Never had a bad meal here and its worth every over priced penny.

Before i begin my review. Let me first clarify that I am Chinese and love "authentic" chinese food. My uncle also ran a Chinese restaurant for years and I learned quite a bit from his experience. This is probably one of worst Chinese food I have ever eaten. I ordered Shredded pork with garlic sauce, ma po tofu, and a szechuan fried tofu as appetizer. 1. Shredded pork with garlic sauce: what an sorry excuse for a dish. There was SO MUCH vegetables that u can hardly find ANY pork!!! I had to flip thru all the stale tasting veggies to find a little pork. My hand muscle started getting sore because the weight of the vegetables. This was covered in a mystery semi dark brown-ish sauce that was not tasty at all. 2. Ma po tofu: this dish is typically cooked with small dices of tofu (very soft), sometimes finely mashed, ground pork, black bean sauce, and of course chili and chili oil. What appeared in front of me is large pieces of semi hard tofu with green peas, and AGAIN in a feces looking mystery brown-ish sauce!!! It wasn't even spicy!! Its very name in Chinese signifies that this dish is spicy. This is a traditional Chinese dish I have no idea how they managed to bomb this one. 3. Szechuan fried tofu: OMG they didn't even bother to cook this fresh. This was either pre-fried or purchased fried and then just shoved into the microwave to heat it up. the skin of the tofu is supposed to be crispy. This dish however, was served STALE. The tofu skin was watery, which means it was microwaved. It had NO aroma of being just out of a fryer of any kind. If you want "authentic" chinese food. This place is the FURTHEST from it. If you like overly sweet or salty dishes, this is your place. If I could give it no stars or negative stars I would. Lastly, this place had ZERO asian visitors when 70% of the restaurant was full. That is also a good indicator if Chinese ppl actually eat there. Apparently not. I will NEVER eat there again. ps. utensils were very dirty, they had a thick powdery substance on them. They weren't even dried properly. thick powdery substance might either be mineral residue which is heavy in michigan water or detergent.

A good experience vs. bad experience at the Peking House really depends on what you're expecting before you get there. Peking House is an old-school, American-ized, chop-suey place. They have ok food, my wife got Orange Chicken, which was breaded, deep fried and served with a gooey, overly orange flavored sauce, which was kind of good, in a mall-food-court way. I had the Mu Shu Pork which tasted off (slightly burned) that was kind of nauseating. Nothing to go back for. If you want quick take out of non-authentic Chinese (the portions are huge), this is your place - if you're looking for real Chinese then go elsewhere.

Best general Tso's chicken I have ever had, large portions, great service, never had a bad meal there.
